Butterfly Dress

Another quick fashion illustration I call the Butterfly Dress.
The butterfly pattern was original by Mcqueen. I altered the arrangement and matched it with gold cross weaving top part. Maybe when I know how to sew I can make this into a real thing!

Fashion Illustration

Got my wisdom teeth pulled today. A bee decided my pain wasn't enough so it decided to sacrifice itself to sting me so I can have more pain. Anyways, here is a quick fantasy dress illustration with some color variations.

Alien Queen Concept Art

Alien Queen Concept Art

I was cleaning up my project folders and found this drawing. Thought it would be a nice entry here! Would love to have the time to develop this into a fully sculpted and textured 3D model.

Lucas - Character Concept Painting

Character Concept Painting

LUCAS

This affluent medium armored male named Lucas is one of the character from a project I am currently developing. This was meant to be a quick concept sketch but I just liked the look of him from the get-go I decided to just flesh him out completely. That way, I don't have to waste time in the future to revisit him. I already have a complete picture of his form in my head basically, and moving on to 3D modeling will be relatively painless.
The design of his outfit is an homage to a Archaic Sealed Heat concept art that I found on the web awhile ago. I think the balance of the hard material and soft material on the original is quite good. I tweak the scale of the different elements of the piece to create a new silhouette that I personally prefer and consider a better fit for Lucas.
Below is the process in GIF and the concept art I referenced from.
Done in Photoshop ~10hrs

Thomas Moran Master Studies - Grand Canyon

Master Studies - Grand Canyon

Here is a landscape master study of one of Thomas Moran's Grand Canyon paintings. This is also one of my favorite paintings by Mr. Moran. The most challenging part of the painting was rendering the surfaces of the rocks; however, it was also the part I found most fun to do.
Learning to flesh out a painting quickly in a presentable manner is my first priority when doing master studies. This painting took approximately 8 hours for me to reach the final stages. I spent 4+ weeks on this. Took an hour or two here and there. This is not a completed painting for my standard. I would definitely spend extra hours to render the rocks in the foreground more in depth if I were to sell it.  I decided to wrap it up and share it on the web, because it is time for me to move on.
Following is the time-lapse GIF of the painting process and the original reference painting by Thomas Moran.

Thomas Moran Master Studies - Cascade Falls Revisioned

Master Studies - Cascade Falls Yosmite Revisioned

This is a master study of Thomas Moran's painting Cascade Falls Yosemite.
A master study is an in depth recreation of a painting by an established artist. In this case, I chose Thomas Moran, because his way of arranging the composition always impresses me. There are plenty to learn from a painting by him, and I cannot wait to do more master studies on him.
The purpose of imitating a painting is to dissect a particular artist's way of depicting something, and learn about how an artist solved problems regarding value, color palette and composition.
The completed painting by me. (~5hrs) and a progress GIF to show the steps I took towards the finishing stages.

3D Diamond Renderings

With Realistic 3D rendering I realize I can design jewelries and present them in a photo-realistic manner!
The above image of the 5 diamonds with different cuts is a result of a week long struggle to get the rocks to reflect and refract light in a correct manner. As you can see, there is light dispersion in the diamond, which was my holy grail. The following images are examples of my first try before I finally got it right.

Ring Design number 1

Ring Design number 2
Two of my first two visualizations of diamond ring designs. The diamond itself is not exhibiting correct light dispersion.
Made in Mental Ray. The diamonds look nice but something is still off. They look more like crystals...

Marquise Diamonds Rendering. There are hints of colors in the diamond but still not strong enough!

Finally!

Here are some promotional materials for websites and social networking sites.
**I am thankful for the opportunity of working with Muirsis because it is from working with them that I learnt about depicting shiny surface. Making a metal surface appear attractive is quite tricky.

2014 and Beginnings

I had been pushing myself to manage my available free time better.

I finished a book called The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. The book bores strong relation with The Art of War in ideology. Steven's book is a modern guide for Artists, or anybody who wishes to go on a journey to achieve success in any activity that rejects immediate satisfactions in favor of long term growth, health or integrity.

I've also started following Noah Bradley, whose works continue to inspire me. His advice are also very helpful and encouraging. A continued process of improving oneself in the making of art is one of the most difficult endeavors. It is likely to be my true priority in life.
